The role of the International Students Department is to welcome and provide ongoing support to newly arrived pupils from many nationalities whose first language is not English. The International Student Co-ordinators work closely with all members of staff to ensure these pupils make maximum use of their time in school and achieve as many GCSE grades as possible.
Aims of the International Students Department
- Provision for International Students at Brownlow Integrated College aids those pupils who have English as their second language. These students come from a diverse range of countries, including Brazil, China, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Russia. It is felt that these pupils can be best helped by being placed in a class appropriate to their cognitive abilities, not their language abilities.
- Ongoing support is available, through both formal and informal interactions, to International Students in small group withdrawal sessions, which cater for language acquisition and their personal and social development.
- Newly arrived Key Stage 4 pupils follow a reduced timetable and study a more limited range of subjects appropriate to their language ability.
- The first language and culture of the students is recognised and celebrated through public occasions and examination entry. We celebrate pupils' achievement and attempt to integrate our International Students fully into the student body.
