GCSE Art and Design

Art and Design is an optional subject at GCSE so a decision is made on whether a pupil has the aptitude and interest to pursue the subject at this level.

GCSE students embark on a two year course (CCEA), which builds upon Key Stage 3 foundation skills and knowledge towards greater individual Art and Design capability and of course good final results.

What is the content of the specification?

  • It builds on the broad Art and Design experiences gained by students who followed the Key Stage 3 N.I. Curriculum Programme of study for Art and Design.
  • It provides teachers with the opportunity to develop flexible courses which capitalise on their resources and are sensitive to the needs of candidates.
  • It provides candidates with experiences in which their intellectual, practical and aesthetic abilities are focused in creative and imaginative work.

What is the Scheme of Assessment?

Candidates are assessed through two units of work:

Unit 1
Coursework accounts for 60% of the overall marks and consists of two outcomes, one in fine art, the other in design, of which one must be two-dimensional, the other three dimensional.  The total work of this unit is marked as a whole.  All areas must be covered.

Unit 2
Externally set assignment accounts for 40% of the overall marks and requires candidates to respond to a given theme within a specified time limit.  The outcome may be fine art or design, two or three-dimensional.

There is no restriction on the use of any materials or processes in either units.

An up-to-date Resource List including materials is available on the internet and in other electronic formats.

A candidate’s total submission initially marked by teachers and moderated by CCEA.

GCSE provides a sound foundation for further study at Advanced GCE and is a particularly good match for the CCEA Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Art and Design.

Extra Curricular

The department runs an after school art club on a Wednesday.  Many enjoy working independently; practising the skills they have learned in art class.

Lurgan Show

Work from the Art Department is exhibited in the Lurgan Show and on several occasions has won the Lurgan Show Art Cup.
