Contribution of Home Economics to the Whole School Curriculum
Home Economics is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and competencies relating in particular to home and family life and which will help them to improve their quality of life.
Pupils are educated about the importance of home and family in the development of individuals and society.
Home Economics provides a learning environment in which pupils are encouraged to think critically, make reasoned choices and manage change in matters relating to home and family. All pupils, whatever their background, abilities or traditions are given the opportunities to realise and extend their capabilities and range of interests beyond traditional horizons.
Home Economics is one strand of Learning for Life and Work. Its numerous skills can be developed, especially the practical skills involved in planning, preparing, cooking and serving food.
Home Economics is studied by all pupils at Key Stage 3. It is divided into three sections: Healthy Eating, Home and Family Life and Independent Living.
In Year 11 students are given the opportunity to study Home Economics (Food) and/or Home Economics (Child Development) to GCSE Level.
